Summer League Champions Following our success in Division 1 of the main Birmingham Chess League the club were also successful in winning the Open division of the Birmingham Summer League.
Division 1 Champs Well done to our first team, who are now Birmingham Chess League division 1 champions 2012-13! The team of six clinched the title with a 4-2 win against Sutton Coldfield, finishing a single point ahead of Bushbury in the table.

Congratulations to the winning team of Don Mason, Iain Galloway, Stephen Briggs, Matthew Long, Philip Purcell and Jonathan Dale (captain), on this ultimate achievement. The win the club's first Birmingham & District League Championship, and sits proudly alongside our sole Leamington & District League Championship in 2007-08, which involved most of the same players.

Warwickshire Open Well done to Don Mason on being the joint winner (on 3½ points) of the Warwickshire Open in March 2013.
Warwickshire QF On 6th May 2012 Warwickshire's Under 120 team won their National Quarter Final Match 6.5:5.5 against Norfolk. This was largely due to John Donovan's win on board 5.
Simul Scottish captain, IM, and GM (Correspondence) Andrew Muir performed a simul at Shirley & Wythall club on 19th April 2012.
Out of a total of 18 boards, Andrew won on each except for one; our own Matthew Long achieved a draw!

Thanks to Gordon Christie for organising the event.

The following day, Andrew played a 5 board Blindfold simul at Phoenix Life where he won 3 and drew 2.

Shirley & Wythall help Warks Open, U140 & U120 teams reach National stages Warks have qualified for the National stages with the following teams:

Open (16 per team including Don Mason): qualified as Regional runner-up (only 2 sides entered) behind Staffs.

U180 (16 per team).

U140 (16 per team including Louis Rawson, Frank Jimenez, Ken Warren, Kim Gilbert and Roger Ball): qualified in third place (behind Worcs and Leics) by beating Staffs, Notts and (by default) Leics in the Regional competition.

U120 (12 per team including John Donovan): qualified, coming third in Region, by beating Staffs Terriers and Notts and drawing with Staffs Bulldogs - unfortunately, they were defeated by Worcs and failed to gobble up Lincs Sausages!

U100 (12 per team): this 'dirty dozen' squad made the Nationals as the Regional runner-up (only 2 teams entered) behind Notts.

By virtue of defaulting their away match to Notts, despite Jon Asbury's expertise the U160 team failed to make it past the Regional hurdle.

Charity Simul Shirley & Wythall Chess Club member and International Master Andrew Muir gave a simultaneous display at Phoenix Life, in Wythall on 28th February. Andrew played 39 opponents and won all 39 games, raising about £500 for charity. Andrew was supported in this event by Phoenix Life who provided the venue and half of the equipment, and the Shirley & Wythall club, who provided 20 boards and sets.

In addition to being a GM (Correspondence) and IM (Over The Board), Andrew has played for Scotland since the European Team Championships in 2005, and captained Scotland at the 2011 Chess Olympiads. He also plays for Hamilton, Scotland, and was Scottish Champion in 2008.
